Another Style

I really enjoy changing my illustration style from time to time to maintain versatility.  The sample below is a rough sketch portraying a curious emotion with a brave look.

What are you looking at?

I was trying to play with reactions.  This one shows a little of it I believe.  It a mixture of being surprised and curious at the same time but not scared.

A Native Girl (from Ifugao) Riding a Wooden Scooter

This is not an unusual scene here in our country.  A lot of children here are still using old toys with no television especially the ones living at the provinces.  Some parents have tried to be resourceful and improvised by creating various toys or bicycles using recycled wood or plastics for their children.

I decided to draw this one simply because it will remind me of the simple things that I used to enjoy during my childhood.  We even enjoyed playing with opened cans and used slippers.

Anatomy Practice Set 2

I'm working on my anatomy again...  Just simple stuff...  I will be adding more from time to time...

Wooden Bridge

I tried searching for another flower to paint on the net but i didn't find anything interesting for now.  Instead i bumped into another wooden bridge and i made my own version of it...

Isolated Sunflowers

Today is our 1st Wedding Anniversary with my wife Margie.  Somehow it inspired me to paint some flowers.  I just found a nice image of sunflowers at the net.  Here is a 40 minute painting version of it.  Enjoy...

Anatomy Practice Set 01

I believe that most artist have forgotten the most basic element of art and that is called Anatomy.  I have seen people getting very good with coloring and painting but still lack the basic knowledge of Anatomy.  Probably because human or animal anatomy requires precision.

In cartooning you could do anything you like with your character's form but implementing the correct anatomy on your characters is another story.  A lot of artists become easily frustrated by distortions  and incorrect positioning of body parts.  And by the way, that is one of the reason i have made this blog.  I have very poor knowledge of anatomy myself.

With this blog i would be able to show you how to create characters with good anatomy by plainly self studying. And also, it would be much easier for me to track down my progress.

As for our reference, i prefer the works of Andrew Loomis.  Here are some works that i have started...

Wooden House (Bahay Kubo) at the Center of Beach

Some of us has this fantasy of living in an isolated place wherein we could be free from distractions, work, stress, pollution and many other individual reasons we may have.  It could be a wooden house at the center of a beach, which could only be reach through a secret entrance...

And just to give you a view of that perfect place.  Here is something i painted...

Incompatible Twin Brothers

We usually have the impression that twins are pretty much the same...  The question is, do they also have the same personality?  I guess no...:)

A Filipino Warrior

It has been a while since my last posting . I was originally planning to have something new at least everyday. It was easier said than done though because i still have pending household chores. Plus i'm kind of doing these things without the help of machines.

And also, i have to spend quality time with my wife Margie Mae and our 7 month old daughter Ayiesha Margarette. But anyway, i was happy doing what i am doing. That is how things are around here. It is important for me to be able put everything into balance and avoid overspending my time with my artworks.

The Last Standing Pig

I am planning to sell some vector images in other host websites within this month. The image below was colored by using sharp-edged highlights and shadows. Although this one was not done using vectors, it has the right coloring style to practice and simulate making a vector image.

I believe one essential thing that we need to consider when illustrating is versatility. What i mean is that we must have the ability to adjust to any drawing or coloring style and not just settling down to our comfort zones. Having our own trademark style is good but adding one or more style is better.  Just remember, there are vast sources of talents out there who are looking for jobs.  If you are looking forward to earning some money with your artworks, then you must have the skills to compete.  And then you will need that versatility.

The Richest Boy in Squatters Area

I used to dream of becoming a superhero when i was a child.  And if i ever get the chance to publish my own book, the title would be "The Richest Boy".  I'd love to give you the details of the story but that would spoil the trill...  But don't worry you'll be the first one to know when it's already out...:)

To those unfamiliar with the term 'Squatters Area'.  It is that place in the Philippines where those people  who can't afford to buy their own land build temporary shelters without the consent of the land owner. Unfortunately, it is very common here in our country since most people are still living in poverty.

There's always the 1st time

Hello Everyone,

This is my first posting (an inked portrait of myself).  Why draw myself?  Simply because that's just how i wanted my profile picture to be...:)  I believe that passion alone would not produce high end illustrations but our perseverance in practicing does.

Please join me on my personal journey towards achieving a more satisfactory and improved artworks in the future.  This is a good way for me and you to motivate ourselves in creating more refined illustrations.

It would be a great honor for me if this could serve as an inspiration to all those newbies out there who are just starting up.  Do not be intimated by other postings and start making your own now.  Nobody could stop us from improving but ourselves.  Let's start now...
